Cape church to host cultural program

Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church will host a cultural event 3 p.m. Sunday that will feature recent immigrants from Burundi.

Within the past year, individuals and families from Burundi have immigrated to the Portland area, seeking political asylum because persecution, or the fear of persecution, based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinions or membership in social groups.

United Methodist churches, including Cape Elizabeth’s, have attempted to help the community with fundraising and awareness events.

Sunday’s event will feature music, dance and personal stories from Burundi refugees. Food from their country, prepared by a chef from Burundi, also will be served. The event is open to the public and is free, but donations will be accepted.
