Area students were named to the dean’s list at Colby College in Waterville for their academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 year.

David M. Furman, a member of the class of 2012, is the son of Robert Furman of South Portland and is majoring in physics at Colby. He attended Cape Elizabeth High School.

Lisa C. Kaplan, a member of the class of 2013, is the daughter of Douglas and Ann Kaplan of Cape Elizabeth and is majoring in government at Colby. She attended Cape Elizabeth High School.

Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., has announced that the following South Portland residents have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester: Keegan Hyland, Daniel Jones and Rebecca Volent.

University of Maine at Farmington student Keri Woodbury of South Portland was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation.

A junior majoring in business economics at, she is a graduate of South Portland High School. With interests in both education and math, Woodbury explored several majors at UMF before discovering her love for business math and economics. Her ultimate goal is to have her own buy-local business that will help make a difference in the local economy. In addition to attending school full time, she currently travels to Portland three to four days a week where she assists with a family business.

“Keri is so deserving of this honor,” said Waleck Dalpour, UMF professor of business and chairman of the Division of Social Science, Business and Global Studies. “She has an incredibly strong work ethic and a real entrepreneurial spirit that will serve her well in the business world either as a team member or at the head of her own business.”

Jasper S. Muse of South Portland was named to first honors on the dean’s list at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Kelsey H. Spratt of Cape Elizabeth was named to the second honors list.

The South Portland Fire Department announced the following promotions:

James Wilson was promoted from lieutenant to deputy chief. He is a 15- year veteran of the department and holds an associate degree in fire science and a bachelor’s degree in leadership. Wilson will be in charge of the training division as well as hazardous materials.

Paul Salway was promoted from firefighter to lieutenant. He is a 16- year veteran of the department and has an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College and a bachelor’s degree in English from Baldwin-Wallace College.

Jon Martin was promoted from firefighter to lieutenant. He is a 10-year veteran of the department and has an associate degree in fire science and an associate degree in criminal justice.
