Police arrest two in pepper spray incident

South Portland police made two arrests 11:30 p.m. May 31 at 18 Ocean St., including a man who allegedly attempted to spray officers with pepper spray when they responded to a domestic disturbance call.

Police said when officers arrived, a witness told them two people inside were fighting. Officers heard a physical altercation inside the residence.

Police said a male, who allegedly had blood on his face, later identified as Nicholas Pallas, 32, of South Portland, opened the door and slammed it shut again. After unsuccessfully attempting to have the two people exit the home, police said the officers forced entry inside and then again forced entry into a locked bedroom area.

The officers found Pallas and Carol Vining, 23, also of South Portland, hiding in a crawl space. At that point, Pallas allegedly pointed a black object at the officers and unsuccessfully tried to spray them with pepper spray. Police said the officers used a Taser on Pallas, who continued to fight them before being taken into custody. Vining allegedly also refused to cooperate.

According to police, Pallas was charged with refusing to submit to arrest-detention, violation of conditional release, assault, criminal use of disabling chemicals, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Vining was also arrested and charged with refusing to submit to arrest-detention and violation of conditional release.
