South Portland police arrested three men around midnight Tuesday, July 3 on charges of drug trafficking and aggravated assault.

Police said they received a call from the 1000 block of Broadway that a man had been assaulted and was screaming for help. When officers responded, they learned three men had allegedly assaulted the 28-year-old victim, then stole his backpack and cellphone and fled in an SUV. Lt. Frank Clark of the South Portland Police Department said the victim knew the suspects.

When police stopped the SUV at the corner of Broadway and Huntress Avenue, they allegedly found $500 worth of crack cocaine packaged in a manner that indicated it was intended for resale.

The officers arrested three 19-year-old men. Mekonnen Berhe, a Portland transient, was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, trafficking Schedule W drugs and violation of conditional release. Raoul Tshiyuka of Portland and John Kansa of South Portland were charged with robbery and aggravated assault.

The men were taken into custody and sent to the Cumberland County Jail. The investigation will be referred to the district attorney's office.
