South Portland Police, Fire, and EMS teams responded to the reported crash at 12:51 a.m. Saturday morning. When they arrived at the bridge, the driver, Daniel Thomas, 22, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was reportedly outside of his vehicle. Lt. Frank Clark of the South Portland Police Department said in a report that Thomas was the only occupant of the vehicle, and his van was the only car involved in the crash.

After EMS personnel ensured Thomas was unhurt, police performed a roadside investigation and arrested Thomas for OUI. He was then taken to Cumberland County Jail, where he received a blood test.

Clark said the crash is still under investigation, but speed and alcohol were likely factors involved in the crash. The case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
