South Portland Strikers Quest for a Championship

The South Portland Boys Strikers U12 Boys Italy Team had a great weekend knocking off #1 seed Gorham and #3 seed Falmouth to advance to this Saturdays final games in pool play. Both games were extremely close. In the first game on Saturday our lean band of 10 boys matched a very highly skilled Gorham team (8 players from each team on the field at once). Gorham brought in fresh troops the entire game with two full lines of substitutions and opened up the scoring on a very soggy fog filled field. Moments later Dylan Houle powered a 22 yard shot past a the diving Gorham goalie to tie the game. One of the keys to the game was the aggressive play of Jordan Mangini and Jacob Hackett that spent much of the game pressuring Gorham through out the game. With the steady play of Aleks Kaurin and Jacob Milton :20 minutes later Dylan Houle again struck a 20 yard shot into the net to put up the Strikers up 2-1 with :15 minutes left to play. Riley McCauley, Ben Sivik and Jackson Linscott provided a rock solid defensive stand throughout the game and assisted goalie Quinn Watson who made incredible save after save to keep Gorham from scoring again as the clock ran out.

In the second game of pool play SP faced a very talented Falmouth squad. Falmouth brought over 16 players and looked very impressive as we entered the game. A very close game. The SP defense was very solid only allowing Falmouth 3 shots on goal. SP opened up the scoring when Jacob Milton scored on a scrambling ball that bounced off a number of players in front of the Falmouth net. Our midfielders of Dylan Houle, Jacob Hackett, Jordan Mangini played end to end with only a brief break to help control the tempo of the game. Alek Kaurin kept Falmouth in their own end of the field with a number of scoring chances. Falmouth then tied the score. :10 minutes later SP went ahead on a beautifully executed number of passes as Mitchell Adams received a pass at the 18 yard line and struck the ball firm into the Falmouth net. The last :15 minutes Falmouth pressured SP but our boys kept their composure and with a lot of heart and determination came out with a 2-1 victory.
