Signs a relief to Broadway pedestrian

To the editor:

On behalf of all the pedestrians who regularly use the Broadway crosswalk at the Preble intersection, I would like to thank Tex Haeuser, the city of South Portland and the state of Maine very much for the new crosswalk lights and signs. They are most effective in helping us cross this busy road.

Southern Maine Community College is a stakeholder in this neighborhood. At a recent neighborhood association meeting regarding East Broadway traffic, SMCC President Dr. Ronald Cantor attributed the dramatic increase in college traffic to the college’s three-fold increase in enrollment. A satellite parking lot (on the other side of the Casco Bay Bridge and another near I-295 and the Mall) with express bus service three times times daily would ease congestion and provide commuting alternatives for all.
