New school officials take oath of office

SOUTH PORTLAND – Richard Carter will serve as chairman of the South Portland Board of Education in 2013 for the second time in four years. Carter replaces Tappan Fitzgerald in the position. Fitzgerald will serve as vice chairman for the upcoming year. The upcoming year will be Carter’s ninth on the board.

Meanwhile, new at-large school board member Mary House took her oath of office and was sworn into her position, along with incumbents James Gilboy, Richard Matthews and Fitzgerald, all of whom ran uncontested to regain their seats for another term.

In his comments as new chairman of the school board, Carter called on the city to continue the strong support for its schools it has shown through the past.

“There is nothing that we do as a society that is more important than educating our children,” Carter said.
