The winner of the Sentry’s 2012 Great Person Award is Judy Magnuson, Blueberry Drive resident and speech therapist at the Dora L. Small Elementary School.

“I know she goes above and beyond what a speech therapist has to do,” said Jennifer Christensen, who nominated Magneson for the award.

Christensen said she has seen a significant improvement in her son Jack’s language skills since he started working with Magnuson. Jack, a fourth-grader at Small School, who has Down Syndrome, has worked with Magnuson since he arrived at the school.

“He just loves her. He loves going in and his skills have gone through the roof,” Christensen said.

Magnuson has worked at Small School for eight years, and has two daughters of her own. Before assuming the position in the school department, she worked in early childhood intervention. She is a native Mainer who was born in South Portland before she moved to Auburn in elementary school.

“They’re a super supportive family,” Magnuson said of the Christensens, “which makes my work easier, in that I know I’m getting support at home.”

“She is wonderful and deserving,” Christensen added. “I think everyone who works with children deserves more respect and appreciation than they get.”
