Be a part of history at Cape’s Family Fun Day

By Ted Smith

Summer is fast approaching and, so too is Family Fun Day. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 15 and come to beautiful Fort Williams for what may be history in the making.

This year the committee is looking to promote Family Fun Day in a really big way. Kids games are a perennial part of the event and the water balloon toss has been one of our more popular activities in years past. Fun for all ages, why not to attempt a world record for the number of participants in a single toss? The idea is simple and it only requires that we better the present record. Can you think of a better or more fun way to get Cape Elizabeth on the map and yourself in the record books? Participants will need to register, so a sign up table will be inside the park. The event will start around noon, so be sure to arrive early to ensure your place. The Cape Elizabeth High School sailing team will sell pre-filled water balloons and a designated “toss” area will be roped off so everyone can be ready. Limber up that pitching arm and come to Fort Williams for what’s sure to be some riotous fun.

The committee is working hard on the day’s events and we are encouraging local groups and clubs to call if they are interested in participating. There is still plenty of booth space and registration is free – all you need is to bring your own set-up and whatever materials for your activity. If interested, please contact Frank Butterworth at 767-3571 or Ted Smith at 799-8515. If you are a local artist or craftsperson, this is your chance to get the jump on this summer’s art shows. Artisans should contact Rose Kennealy at 799-1674.

Family Fun Day celebrates our spirit of community as well as our love and appreciation of Fort Williams itself. This a nonprofit event that is meant to encourage and support the numerous groups and organizations in our town — groups such as the sports and music boosters, as well as the many community service and religious groups that rely entirely upon contributions and fundraisers such as this. Supporting Family Fun Day is in effect supporting them by providing a chance to raise much-needed revenue while encouraging the spirit of caring and community that is New England. Please note, there will be no scheduled rain.

The culmination of months of planning and organization by a very small group of volunteers, the Family Fun Day Committee, is always open to assistance in a variety of areas, including the parade, games and cleanup, particularly on the day of the event. We are also looking for people to serve on the committee who are interested in planning and organizing the event itself. Your level of involvement is up to you. The commitment is a small portion of time and is a great way to get involved in the town while having fun doing it. If interested, or if you would like more information about Family Fun Day, please contact Frank Butterworth at 767-3571 or Ted Smith at 799-8515. Come and help us make this year’s event the best ever.

Ted Smith is co-chairman of the Family Fun Day Committee.
