(Courtesy photo) Last Friday the residents of the South Portland Nursing Home celebrated the Kentucky Derby with a parade of bonnets worthy of England’s Kate Middleton and friends. Some of the whacky creations included: Old Lady Gaga, Floppy Flossy, The Wilted Rose Society, Wal-Mart Greeter, Beach Blanket Bingo, Bye-Bye Birdie and Dependable Fruit of the Loams. The seniors had a great deal of fun inventing their masterful hat fashions in their arts and crafts program.

“The higher the hat, the closer to God,” said resident Sally Flynn.

“Reckon we’re ready for the running of the ponies,” added Luann Gray.

No illegal bets were placed on the outcome of the horse race.
