A South Portland woman who allegedly stole money and jewelry from elderly residents in the city was arrested by South Portland police Wednesday morning, May 15.

Margaret Wilkes, 53, of South Portland, entered victims’ homes by saying she was a representative of “The Agency,” according to a press release from Sgt. Steve Webster of the South Portland Police Department. Webster said Wilkes asked for medical information and “conducted inspections” before stealing from the victims.

Wilkes is charged with three counts of Class B burglary and three counts of Class E theft. South Portland and Portland police executed a search warrant at her apartment Wednesday morning, where they say some stolen property was recovered.

Webster said in the release more charges against Wilkes are likely.

“There will be more charges forthcoming as she is suspected of committing similar crimes in jurisdictions other than South Portland,” Webster said.

Wilkes is currently being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $500 bail.
