Area teams have end of year hopes

The South Portland High School boys’ lacrosse team defeated Gorham 12-6 Tuesday, June 5 to move on the Western Maine Class A semifinal round. However, it is not the only team in the Sentry’s coverage area hoping to make a deep run in the postseason tournaments this spring.

The South Portland girls’ lacrosse team entered the 2013 postseason as the seventh seed in Western Maine Class A. Its quarterfinal matchup at Massabesic was scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, after the Sentry’s deadline.

The Cape Elizabeth boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams will each host semifinal games Saturday, June 8 after earning byes in the opening round of their respective Class B tournaments. The girls’ team finished as the second seed in Western Maine, while the boys earned the top seed.

The South Portland softball team is hoping to follow up on last year’s run to the state championship game with another strong showing this spring. The Red Riots earned the second overall seed in Western Maine Class A after a 14-2 regular season and enter the playoffs on an 11-game win streak after an undefeated month of May. They begin postseason play Thursday, June 6.

The Cape Elizabeth softball team also earned a two seed after a 15-1 regular season. The Capers will face Poland Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Class B tournament.
