It is time for all of us to ask again “why do I have this condition”? What are the underlying issues that have contributed to the onset of this condition? Is my Hypertension or arthritis a disease or a symptom of some underlying metabolic or immune dysfunction? Should I just go ahead and take the medicine that is considered the standard of care for treating this condition? Or, should there be further evaluation to answere the question of where dysfunction is originating and what are the contributing factors driving it?

In most situations and in planning for wellness a Functional Medicine evaluation and plan of care can help to address these questions.

In integrating his significant experience in conventional Family Medicine with Functional Medicine, Dr. Sholl looks further “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (body, soul, spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning. Through this, the doctorpatient team reaches a higher level of understanding of the patient’s “story” and can make better informed decisions about treatment and wellness options.

Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what are sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise. This approach also can include use of the latest laboratory and diagnostic techniques, prescribed medications and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, and stress management techniques.

Thank you so much for taking such wonderful care of my father Paul during his recent respite stay at Kindred Healthcare of Kennebunk while my husband and I had to travel out of town for 2 weeks. Your concern and care for his well-being is so greatly appreciated. With each respite stay, I feel more comfortable leaving him in your care. I will continue to care for him at home as long as I can, but a HUGE weight has been lifted from my shoulders just knowing that the staff at Kennebunk can also provide for his care while I’m away or not able to care for him any longer.

Dr. Ellie’s Health Tips:

Health Tip of the Month: The study of aging in medicine continues to amaze me. In the quest for eternal life, science has determined that we can take certain hormonal supplements that diminish in our body as we get older to recapture the glory days of our youth. This way we can“feel younger” than we actually are. Did I mention that to recapture our youth, you have to be fairly wealthy, as these hormonal treatments are pretty expensive. The good news is that I have a prescription for healthy aging that will help you to feel younger, keep you healthier and not really cost you too much more than you already spend.

The key to aging well involves three main areas; movement, hydration and nutrition. First, motion is the key. I had an elderly patient in his 80’s who looked like he was in his 60’s. If you don’t move around, you will rust. Exercise is the key. You have to move every day. Not work type move, like at your job, but something else in addition to your regular activities. Walk, bike, swim, yoga, weight train, pilates, jog. Just do it. In addition, if you work out first thing in the morning and do not eat anything other than a protein food for the first two hours after training, the human growth hormone in your body will be more readily produced, helping to combat the effects of aging. For free, no less!!

Our body’s are made up of 70% water. As we get older, our tissues and cells tend to dehydrate more easily. Replace these lost fluids with plenty of water throughout the day and not only will cell aging slow down, your skin will wrinkle less and your muscles and nerves will work better. Also free!!

Remember, you are what you eat is very true. Eat high salt, chemical laced food and your body will respond with decreased health and performance. Eat fresh, lively foods without chemicals and you will be healthier and have less illness. Here is some advice that is not free, but well worth the expense to ensure a long healthy life. Take some vitamins every day. Even one multi-vitamin daily was shown to improve the health of people over 55. Fish oil supplements improve heart health, prevent stroke and keep the brain functioning to ward off senile issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Also, take some anti-oxidant supplements like C, E, selenium and astaxanthan to help the cells in your body be healthier and help prevent diseases like cancer. Pay attention to these three important areas and getting older won’t be a bad thing, it will be a cool thing filled with fun and good health

Thought for the Month: If I’d known I was going to live so long, I’d have taken better care of myself. ~Leon Eldred

Chiropractic Thought for the Month: There is a fourth thing to do to help the body age well. Continue with your regular chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments help the spinal bones to move properly which can help to prevent arthritis. Adjustments also balance the spinal musculature which keeps you moving better and more freely. Lastly, the affect spinal adjustments have on the nervous system is well documented and this will help your body to function better. Better function equals greater health.

RetroFoam Super Insulation Boosts Fire Safety

After 10 years of testing in older buildings throughout the upper Midwest, RetroFoam, a new super-insulation technology, is available to homeowners in Maine. In older, existing homes, not only does it offer the advantages of foam insulation without the hassle and expense of remodeling, it also provides significant safety features for families in the event of fire. “In my years of experience with building construction, teaching fire science and fighting fires,” says Jack Dean, retired fire chief now living in the Lakes Region,“I’ve never seen a product like this that offers so many fire safety advantages.” Traditional fiber insulations often accelerate flame spread as well as produce deadly vapors. RetroFoam is a remarkable fire Class I material; its contribution to flame spread is zero while giving off nothing but carbon dioxide and water vapor. This also contrasts with spray foam insulations, which current building codes require be treated with a fireproof coating to minimize flame spread and release of toxic gases. “Many people do not realize the way most fire deaths occur.” Dean explains. “Deadly fires are often quite small, and happen at night. They can be in a corner of the house far

from the bedrooms. But the air spaces in the wall cavities distribute the smoke throughout the house. People die of smoke inhalation in their sleep without even waking up.” Dean is a big backer of RetroFoam.“With wall cavities filled with this RetroFoam product, smoke moves through the house only slowly. I’m recommending it to my friends and family.” Eric Hallee, Vice President of Chase Custom Homes adds, “In researching the differences between RetroFoam and [other] products, it’s apparent that RetroFoam will fast become a leader in the renovation market. The environmental benefits have real meaning to the consumer. RetroFoam installation doesn’t [produce] harmful vapors. It is very impressive that installers do not need protective gear.” Home Snuggers, Inc., the quaintly named re-insulation contractor in Windham has been awarded RetroFoam installation and distribution rights for Maine. “We’re very pleased to be associated with RetroFoam and its leading edge in sustainability and green technology,” says Mark Walker, Home Snuggers’ General Manager. “Our focus is solely on retrofitting existing homes and buildings throughout southern Maine. Years

into the future, as far down the road as anyone can see, energy costs are not going down. We plan to be there with healthy, affordable products, and the integrity of a good neighbor in the community.” Scientific testing ranks RetroFoam highest in R-Value per inch of anything for existing homes. It’s also reduces outside noise dramatically. Installation usually takes one day. And it’s injected from the outside so there’s no messy cleanup. Dan Edwards of Bridgton had their home “snugged“ in November. “We’ve noticed a difference in our heat use already,” said Edwards. “We’ll probably use at least one less tank this year. And the house is quieter – a plus here on Rt. 302.” Deborah King of Cape Elizabeth spoke of one cold, sunny morning, “I walked into the office and exclaimed,‘It is so hot in here. You have to turn the heat down.’ Apparently the RetroFoam is working. The heat wasn’t even on.” According to Walker, although Home Snuggers schedule is quite full in the fall, they do have some openings for new customers in June and July. But, it would seem, that won’t be for long.

History of Hair Removal Primitive Compared To Today!

Throughout history humans have been involved in removing their body hair. Sometimes for health and safety reasons, or because of social norms. Hair removal can be a component of religious beliefs, social pressures, and political identification. The following time line illustrates that hair removal crosses all cultures and genders. 100,000 B.C. -Archeologists agree that Neanderthal men pulled their hair out with their fingers, or used two shells together forming the first ‘tweezers’. 30,000 B.C. - Prehistoric man used flint to shave the hair off their body. 4,000- 3,000 B.C.-In ancient Egypt, both men and women removed all their body hair most likely to protect against infestations of parasites. They used a compound of arsenic and quicklime. 3,000 B.C.- The technological feat of copper metallurgy produced ‘razors’ in India and Egypt. Shaving became the preferred method of hair removal. 1500-1200 B.C.-Archeologists find ‘razors’ in what is now Sweden and Norway. 500 B.C. - Alexander the Great andwomen in Greece singed the hair off of the bodies. 60 B.C. - Ancient Egyptian women begin using a process called sugaring to remove hair and they also developed a skill to use

thread to remove hair. These methods are still in use today. Middle Ageswomen singed and used abrasives to remove body hair. At that time in history, it was believed that obvious body hair was a sign that the woman was a witch! Depilatories were made from cat dung and vinegar. 1500-The Aztecs used volcanic obsidian glass to shave their body hair. 1600-Women in Europe plucked their faces, foreheads, and eyebrows, following the trend of Queen Elizabeth. Early 1800’s- Women continue to use depilatories and tweezing. 1875-Electrolysis was developed for permanent removal of eyelashes, and is still in use today 1915-Harper’s magazine publishes photos of women in sleeveless dresses and free of underarm hair. This is when western women began to shave in earnest. The aggravation of dealing with unwanted hair can be relieved by Electrolysis. It is safe, works on all hair color/skin colors, and the skin improves over time as the hair follicles are ‘disarmed’ of their DNA. Judy Worcester of Biddeford Electrolysis is proud to be trusted by people to rid them of bothersome hair. Call Judy at 205-2146 to schedule a consultation. www.biddefordelectrolysis.com
