Dr. Ellie’s Health Tips:

Health Tip of the Month: Did you ever wonder how the big drug companies come up with their wonder drugs? A BBC documentary, Pill Poppers shed some light on this amazingly dysfunctional topic. In one major drug company, a laboratory has 2 million chemical compounds in a secure vault. Scientists spend their days introducing disease molecules into each of the 2 million molecules, hoping to see if anything happens. If anything happens, the scientists conduct further testing to find out what has happened and why it happened. Poppers reported that hundreds of millions of these tests are conducted and it takes $ 1 billion and around 15 years to achieve an approved drug. The scary part is that once the drug is approved by the government, there is no guarantee of its safety. Most information about a drug is learned after it has been released to the general public. A typical clinical trial while the drug is being developed does not give the proposed drug any widespread exposure due to the limited number of research subjects. It is usually after millions of people start taking the drug that the side effects are observed. Here is a quote from the movie, “Drugs are not designed but discovered, and we only find what they really do to us when we take them. The difference between a drug and a poison is basically the dose.” Popular press and TV commercials constantly preach drug usage to us. Over the course of our lifetime, the average person has taken 14,000 pills and by the time a person reaches their 70’s they could be taking five or more pills a day. The question that is asked of us in this movie is, are these pills really beneficial and are they doing more harm than good?

Thought for the Month: The longer I live, the less confidence I have in drugs and the greater is my confidence in the regulation and administration of diet and regimen. ~ John Redman Coxe, 1800

Chiropractic Thought for the Month: Chiropractic has always been a 100% natural and drug free approach to health care. Not only will it keep the body off of pain medications due to the aches and pains from everyday living, but research shows that chiropractic has a profound affect on the body’s overall performance and immune system function which can help the body to be healthier and off of drugs!

Need help navigating your health insurance?

Shopping for health insurance shouldn’t be a painful experience. While many dread the thought, some avoid it all together, while others settle for a quick, uniformed, on-line purchase; never knowing what they have for coverage, and having no agent to call. It’s no wonder people are frustrated, disappointed, and confused. All too often, people learn what they don’t have for coverage, when the unexpected and unforeseen happens. By then, it’s too late. That’s unfortunate. Don’t let it happen to you!

My clients know and feel confident with their coverage. I am a local agent to call, when you need help, or have questions. I represent many different carriers, and also utilize state and hospital assistance resources (when appropriate) to help individuals, families, and small businesses find affordable solutions that meet your needs and budget. I meet all my clients in person, and service your changing needs. I cordially invite you to discover a better health insurance experience. My service is free. I look forward to helping you! Call Karen R. Vachon at 207- 730-2664.

5 Tips for Denture Wearers to Keep Their Smile Healthy

1. Relines are necessary preventative care for denture wearers. These days we seem to be busier than ever. Why not take a few moments and consider when your last reline was. Dental professionals suggest a reline every 3-5 years to keep your gums healthy, teeth fitting correctly, and your appearance free of unnecessary wrinkles.

2.Toothpaste is not made for dentures. Even though your dentures look like teeth they are still simply a prosthetic. The enamel on real teeth requires different care than your denture. To improve your cleaning techniques simply brush your denture with a brush and warm water to remove any food particles. Follow by soaking your denture for at least 20 minutes in an anti-fungal soak. If you like the clean, fresh taste toothpaste provides why not try a nonalcohol mouthwash.

3. Having to use large quantities of adhesives is not normal. Many people merely accept adhesive as a necessary part of their denture wearing life. This does not have to be the case. It’s usually a sign that your denture is not fitting you correctly and can be causing damage to your oral tissues. Ask your dental professional what can be done to fix this problem.

4. You need periodic exams to make sure your oral tissues are healthy. A lot of people receive their dentures and think they are all set for 10-15 years. However, just as we take care to make sure the rest of our body is in good working it’s a good idea to schedule an oral exam with your dental care provider. They can teach you how to do your own periodic checks at home.

5. Replace your dentures every 10-15 years. Too many people believe their dentures are good for 20+ years. How far from the truth!! Consider that your denture is made of a hard rigid material. Your face, mouth and jaw on the other hand, change over the years. This causes the artificial teeth to wear down over time and your denture to not work effectively.

Do you suffer from depression and medication is not helping? Or the medication has stopped working? Perhaps the side effects keep you from taking medication. There is an FDA-cleared, nondrug treatment available for you: TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.) Our success rate is 53% of patients go into remission and 74% have a good response to the treatment.

TMS is a noninvasive method of relieving the symptoms of depression. Using electromagnetic pulses at a key area of the brain known to be under-active in depression sufferers, the brain is restored to normal function.

TMS has been used for many years before the FDA approved its use for the general public in 2008. Since then over 12,000 treatments have been performed around the country. We are one of over 500 treatment sites.

We are pleased to meet with you at our South Portland office for a consultation looking at the clinical details of your depression and decide if TMS is a good fit for you.

RetroFoam Super Insulation Boosts Fire Safety

After 10 years of testing in older buildings throughout the upper Midwest, RetroFoam, a new superinsulation technology, is available to homeowners in Maine. In older, existing homes, not only does it offer the advantages of foam insulation without the hassle and expense of remodeling, it also provides significant safety features for families in the event of fire. “In my years of experience with building construction, teaching fire science and fighting fires,” says Jack Dean, retired fire chief now living in the Lakes Region, “I’ve never seen a product like this that offers so many fire safety advantages.” Traditional fiber insulations often accelerate flame spread as well as produce deadly vapors. RetroFoam is a remarkable fire Class I material; its contribution to flame spread is zero while giving off nothing but carbon dioxide and water vapor. This also contrasts with spray foam insulations, which current building codes require be treated with a fireproof coating to minimize flame spread and release of toxic gases. “Many people do not realize the way most fire deaths occur.” Dean explains. “Deadly fires are often quite small, and happen at night. They can be in a corner of

the house far from the bedrooms. But the air spaces in the wall cavities distribute the smoke throughout the house. People die of smoke inhalation in their sleep without even waking up.” Dean is a big backer of RetroFoam. “With wall cavities filled with this RetroFoam product, smoke moves through the house only slowly. I’m recommending it to my friends and family.” Eric Hallee, Vice President of Chase Custom Homes adds, “In researching the differences between RetroFoam and [other] products, it’s apparent that RetroFoam will fast become a leader in the renovation market. The environmental benefits have real meaning to the consumer. RetroFoam installation doesn’t [produce] harmful vapors. It is very impressive that installers do not need protective gear.” Home Snuggers, Inc., the quaintly named re-insulation contractor in Windham has been awarded RetroFoam installation and distribution rights for Maine. “We’re very pleased to be associated with RetroFoam and its leading edge in sustainability and green technology,” says Mark Walker, Home Snuggers’ General Manager. “Our focus is solely on retrofitting existing homes and

buildings throughout southern Maine. Years into the future, as far down the road as anyone can see, energy costs are not going down. We plan to be there with healthy, affordable products, and the integrity of a good neighbor in the community.” Scientific testing ranks RetroFoam highest in R-Value per inch of anything for existing homes. It’s also reduces outside noise dramatically. Installation usually takes one day. And it’s injected from the outside so there’s no messy cleanup. Dan Edwards of Bridgton had their home “snugged“ in November. “We’ve noticed a difference in our heat use already,” said Edwards. “We’ll probably use at least one less tank this year. And the house is quieter – a plus here on Rt. 302.” Deborah King of Cape Elizabeth spoke of one cold, sunny morning, “I walked into the office and exclaimed, ‘It is so hot in here. You have to turn the heat down.’ Apparently the RetroFoam is working. The heat wasn’t even on.” According to Walker, although Home Snuggers schedule is quite full in the fall, they do have some openings for new customers in June and July. But, it would seem, that won’t be for long.
