Cottage Road Service Center

“We don’t work on cars... We fix them!”

Vince Olsen, ASE certified auto technician and owner of Cottage Road Service Center in South Portland, knows people bring a lot more through the door than just a broken car when their vehicles break down.

There are kids to bring to day care, soccer games to attend, work commitments to tend to and appointments to keep, all piled on top of an unplanned expense to add to the stress level.

“We try to empathize with that as much as we can,” Olsen said. “Happy customers are much more important than a healthy bottom line. Nobody plans in their budget to have car repairs, but we’re here to make that as easy as possible.”

The small staff of certified technicians at Cottage Road Service Center bring years of experience to each vehicle they service. Olsen started the business in 2008, after he said he became frustrated seeing some mechanics lie to customers in order to pad the bottom line. That’s not the service customers can expect at Cottage Road Service Center.

Olsen has made “complete honesty” the tenet of his business at Cottage Road Service Center. Technicians make a point to understand each customer and their needs, and tailor their service differently for a senior citizen who only puts a few hundred miles on the car each year, or a working family that uses the vehicle constantly.

The team at Cottage Road Service Center also understands that tough Maine weather conditions put an emphasis on practicality for drivers in the South Portland area. Not everyone can buy a new car every five years, Olsen said, so the technicians will prioritize their work and give customers options rather than simply selling as many repairs as possible, some maybe unnecessary.

The customer service emphasis has brought an incredibly high retention rate for Cottage Road Service Center, and the business steadily and consistently has grown through word of mouth, Olsen said. Technicians will look at any vehicle, but specialize in Asian and domestic models such as GM, Toyota or Honda.

“We put ourselves in the customers’ shoes to have confidence restored in their vehicles,” Olsen said. As the shop’s motto says, “We don’t work on cars, we fix them.”
