Experienced Attorney Joins

Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice, P.A.

Albert Ayre has more than 40 years of experience as a practitioner, providing legal expertise and service to Maine individuals and small business owners. Al has been both a partner at a large firm and on his own as a sole practitioner; however, at Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice, P.A., Ayre is the “new kid on the block”.

Ayre, a South Portland resident, joined Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice, located at 7 Ocean Street, on May 1. Previously, he worked with the Portland law firm Pierce Atwood LLP from 1972 to 1993, becoming a partner in 1977. In 1994 he began working as a sole practitioner, later joining with Jim Liddell, Esq., a bright young lawyer from Yarmouth, to form Ayre & Liddell LLP. Jim went on to accept a challenging position with the State of Maine, and Ayre began to think about eventually winding down his busy practice.

“At this point in my career, I found myself asking, ‘What’s the best long term solution for my clients and for me?’ I’ve known these people (at Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice) for a long time. I’m very familiar with the firm, and I found the range of expertise at the firm fit very nicely with my experience,” Ayre said.

Over his 40-year career, Ayre has developed an expertise with small businesses, as well as real estate and probate litigation. He said the two areas appealed to him because cases always focus on the facts, and he enjoys the challenge of detailed preparation.

“The facts are what they are. If you do your homework before you present your case, you can almost always out-prepare the other side,” Ayre said.

Ayre brings decades of experience and a client list that stretches back among multiple generations. Attorneys at Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice practice areas include personal injury, divorce and family law, real estate, municipal law, corporate/business law, elder law, including estate preparation and probate administration, probate litigation and criminal law. The firm also serves as local counsel to various companies with business interests in Maine.

Ayre chose to make the switch from working as a sole practitioner to become “Of Counsel” at Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice because he wanted to find a firm where he could maintain a one-on-one relationship with clients while benefitting from the expertise of an experienced and talented firm as he finishes his career. “I know my clients will be well taken care of here long after I am gone,” he said.

As a South Portland resident, Ayre knew the lawyers at Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice, knew the firm’s reputation, and knew the firm worked to establish individual relationships with each of their clients.

“This is the way it should be. It’s more of a family than a firm,” Ayre said.

Before starting his career in Portland, Ayre received his bachelors’ degree from Yale University in 1964, served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968, where he attained the rank of Captain. He then received his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1971.

Ayre serves as the treasurer and sits on the Board of Governors for the Maine State Bar Association, an organization with more than 3,100 members statewide.
