The Dog Paws Inn,

Your Dog’s Home Away from Home

There was once paint on the half gate at the entryway to the Dog Paws InnonGorhamRoadinScarborough. Today, that paint has been worn away and the wood finish on top of the gate is scratched down to a rough surface. That wear and tear has come from excited dogs hopping up, hurrying to get inside to play with their friends at the day care.

“They’re so excited when they get here,” said owner Catherine Rogers, “and at the end of the day they’re excited when their owners come to pick them up.”

Rogers said owners have told her their dogs will start barking sometimes a mile or more away from Dog Paws Inn, knowing they’re in for a full day of supervised indoor and outdoor play.

The Dog Paws Inn has hosted both boarding and day care dogs for 10 years. Some dogs started when they were puppies just after the day care opened and are still there today, others have just started in the last few days. No matter the size, personality or age of the dog, Rogers said her focus is always on safety.

That focus on safety is the reason each dog goes through a screening process before they are accepted to Dog Paws Inn either for boarding or day care. The staff makes sure each dog that attends can play in a group, doesn’t show any aggression to humans or other dogs and is comfortable in a crate.

“We want dogs that will be happy to be here,” Rogers said.

Rogers accepts a maximum of 19 dogs at one time. That number is small enough, she said, to provide individual attention without the sense of being lost in the shuffle, but also large enough that the dogs can be grouped with other similar personalities in play groups.

Rogers and the rest of the staff at Dog Paws Inn are all highly trained to ensure safety. Rogers also lives on site so she can offer boarding dogs an evening bathroom and exercise break and provide assistance if an emergency happens, even late at night or early in the morning.

Dog Paws Inn is located at 373 Gorham Road in Scarborough. It is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a two-hour break from noon to 2 p.m. for quiet time, and open Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, including prices, testimonials and contact information to set up a screening for your dog, visit dogpawsinn.com.
