6-Year-Old Assaulted in South Portland
South Portland Police have identified a suspect who allegedly assaulted a 6-year-old girl near Brown Elementary School Monday evening,
The suspect, a child between the age of 11 and 14, did not have his name released because he is a juvenile.
Sgt. Steven Webster of the South Portland Police Department said in a media release few details will be released about the assault.
"First and foremost we are trying to protect and support the victim and her family. Also, the person responsible is a child himself who faces certain challenges," Webster wrote.
The victim was treated at a nearby hospital following the assault Monday evening on Highland Avenue near the elementary school. She was released
later that evening.
Police released a description of the suspect Tuesday afternoon, describing him as a young white male with wire-rimmed glasses last seen riding a blue Trek mountain bike. About two hours after the description was released, Webster said police identified the person responsible.
"We appreciate the assistance we received from the public that allowed us to promptly deal with this situation in an appropriate manner," Webster wrote in the release.
