Band will ‘Rush’ to season

More than 70 students completed the annual South Portland High School Marching Band Camp in preparation for the 2013 Marching Band Season.

The Music of Samuel Hazo filled the air and neighborhoods around Dyer School, as students trekked drums, color guard flags and their instruments to the parking lot and fields of Dyer while the high school remains under construction. The Maine Band Directors Association’s opening season of Marching Band Shows begins Saturday, Sept. 21 at Wells High School. For a sneak preview of the South Portland High School Gold Medal Marching Band, plan to attend the home football game on Friday, Sept. 20 for a special presentation of the award-winning marching band.

Under the direction of Craig Skeffington and his staff, the marching band will perform the music of Samuel Hazo, a well-known composer, whose music has been adapted by many drum corps and marching bands for use on the field. This year, selections from “Rush,” “In Heavens Air” and “Sevens” will bring Hazo’s music alive. The season will culminate with the finals on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Thornton Academy in Saco.
