Rolnick Chiropractic

Dr. Ellie’s Health Tips: The Birth of Chiropractic. It was September 18 of 1895, when a magnetic healer named Dr. D.D. Palmer examined a deaf janitor in Davenport, Iowa. Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor who worked in the building in which D.D. Palmer practiced, described to Dr. Palmer that he lost his hearing 17 years previously while exerting himself. Mr. Lillard explained that he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. Dr. Palmer examined Mr. Lillard and located subluxated vertebrae in his spine. Dr. Palmer then purposefully repositioned the vertebrae back into place and Mr. Lillard’s hearing was miraculously restored.

Shortly after the Harvey Lillard case, Dr. Palmer had a patient with heart trouble that also was resolved when he replaced (adjusted) a subluxated vertebrae. In this particular case, he examined the spine and located a subluxated vertebrae pressing on the nerves supplying the messages to the heart. Dr. Palmer reasoned that if two diseases, as different as deafness and heart trouble, came from pressure on the nerves, then other diseases may be caused due to a similar cause.

Thus, the science and art of Chiropractic was formed. The dawn of a new era of health care was born, a system to investigate the cause of all disease and treat the cause, not the sign or symptom. This system is based on a vitalistic approach that allows our bodies to heal naturally, without the use of toxic drugs or surgeries.

Chiropractic has always been and always will be about restoring health and wellness to the body, not treating back and neck pain. We utilize the spine as a way to connect to the rest of the body. 118 years later, Wellness Chiropractic is a lifestyle that creates well being, improves your quality of living and improves your performance at every level. We encourage people to Eat well, Move well and Think well and get regular Chiropractic care.

Denture Solutions: The Place for Quality and Custom Fitting Dentures

The professionals at Denture Solutions, located at 54 York Street, Kennebunk have taken pride in the quality of care offered to their patients. Unique in the fact that their practice is solely devoted to dentures, they are able to focus 100 percent attention on the needs of denture wearers. Following are answers that Licensed Denturist, Robert Palermo, LD, CDT, gives to several important questions about how he offers “solutions” to his clientele.

Q: Your ad features a cosmetic denture. What exactly is that?

A: There are a lot of people walking around with what I affectionately call ‘white things in pink stuff.’ I endeavor to not only fabricate teeth for chewing but also restore a person’s appearance and rejuvenate his or her smile. When I watch makeover shows on television I think to myself, with properly constructed dentures, my patients can have the appearance of a mini face-lift without the costly and sometimes painful procedures.

Q: So you try to restore their appearance?

A: Exactly, by taking into consideration our patients age, eyes, shape of face and combining this with statistical measurements, we choose teeth that complement their features. These measurements help us avoid the look of teeth that are too big or too small for the patient’s face. With teeth selected, it’s time for the set-up. Instead of sending the teeth out to be processed by a technician who’s never seen the patient, we do this step right in our office. We give special attention to the replication of oral tissue that may have diminished over the years. By restoring this lost structure and dimension in a denture, the result will give the patient a more youthful look. Lastly, we have a preview appointment before delivery. This appointment allows our patients the opportunity to view their tooth arrangement set in wax and even try them in. With patient feedback and our expertise, the result is an attractive, natural appearance.

Q: Is it true that if you need extractions you have to be without teeth?

A: Absolutely not. We make dentures by a special process ahead of time so you’re never without teeth. Our office will coordinate appointments with the patient’s oral surgeon and if not familiar with one locally, we’ll help find one. Our treatment plans offer up to a year’s care following extractions. These plans are made up of relines (a resurfacing of the inside of the dentures) combined with adjustments that are vital for healthy oral tissues. These visits enable us to keep the patient comfortable as gums are healing. And, because this is a permanent denture, there is no need for the added expense of a replacement after a year.

Q: What is this lower locking denture with flexible wings?”

A: Many people who wear a lower denture find themselves dissatisfied with the prosthetic. Not only do you have your tongue to contend with, most dentures are not fabricated with enough length to achieve an intimate fit. We employ a method that combines the use of hard and soft materials that can take advantage of areas that a “normal” hard denture cannot access. The result is a tighter, more secure fit, as it "anchors to a patients jaw without the aid of implants".

For the confidence and comfort that comes with natural looking and fitting teeth, make sure your teeth are made just right for you. Denture Solutions offers relines and repairs while you wait, as well as affordable payment options.

RetroFoam Super Insulation Boosts Fire Safety

After 10 years of testing in older buildings throughout the upper Midwest, RetroFoam, a new superinsulation technology, is available to homeowners in Maine. In older, existing homes, not only does it offer the advantages of foam insulation without the hassle and expense of remodeling, it also provides significant safety features for families in the event of fire. “In my years of experience with building construction, teaching fire science and fighting fires,”says Jack Dean, retired fire chief now living in the Lakes Region, “I’ve never seen a product like this that offers so many fire safety advantages.” Traditional fiber insulations often accelerate flame spread as well as produce deadly vapors. RetroFoam is a remarkable fire Class I material; its contribution to flame spread is zero while giving off nothing but carbon dioxide and water vapor. This also contrasts with spray foam insulations, which current building codes require be treated with a fireproof coating to minimize flame spread and release of toxic gases. “Many people do not realize the way most fire deaths occur.” Dean explains. “Deadly fires are often quite small, and happen at night. They can be in a corner of the house far from the bedrooms.

But the air spaces in the wall cavities distribute the smoke throughout the house. People die of smoke inhalation in their sleep without even waking up.” Dean is a big backer of RetroFoam. “With wall cavities filled with this RetroFoam product, smoke moves through the house only slowly. I’m recommending it to my friends and family.” Eric Hallee, Vice President of Chase Custom Homes adds, “In researching the differences between RetroFoam and [other] products, it’s apparent that RetroFoam will fast become a leader in the renovation market. The environmental benefits have real meaning to the consumer. RetroFoam installation doesn’t [produce] harmful vapors. It is very impressive that installers do not need protective gear.” Home Snuggers, Inc., the quaintly named re-insulation contractor in Windham has been awarded RetroFoam installation and distribution rights for Maine. “We’re very pleased to be associated with RetroFoam and its leading edge in sustainability and green technology,” says Mark Walker, Home Snuggers’ General Manager. “Our focus is solely on retrofitting existing homes and

buildings throughout southern Maine. Years into the future, as far down the road as anyone can see, energy costs are not going down. We plan to be there with healthy, affordable products, and the integrity of a good neighbor in the community.” Scientific testing ranks RetroFoam highest in R-Value per inch of anything for existing homes. It’s also reduces outside noise dramatically. Installation usually takes one day. And it’s injected from the outside so there’s no messy cleanup. Dan Edwards of Bridgton had their home “snugged“ in November. “We’ve noticed a difference in our heat use already,” said Edwards. “We’ll probably use at least one less tank this year. And the house is quieter – a plus here on Rt. 302.” Deborah King of Cape Elizabeth spoke of one cold, sunny morning, “I walked into the office and exclaimed, ‘It is so hot in here. You have to turn the heat down.’ Apparently the RetroFoam is working. The heat wasn’t even on.” According to Walker, although Home Snuggers schedule is quite full in the fall, they do have some openings for new customers in June and July. But, it would seem, that won’t be for long.
