Drive benefits food cupboard

The Rotary Club of South Portland Sunrise (formerly the Rotary Club of Breakwater-Daybreak), based in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, will hold a stuff the bus food drive for South Portland Food Cupboard 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 to celebrate the relocation of the South Portland Food Cupboard to larger facilities.

“Local food pantries survive on year-round community support and the relocation of the South Portland Food Cupboard to larger quarters is a great occasion to remind everyone how needed, and valued, their contributions to the South Portland Food Cupboard are. This effort will help the Food Cupboard during the weeks before the big holiday push,” said Tracey Merrill, club president.

Partnering with Shaw’s Supermarkets and South Portland Housing Authority, the collection will be held at Shaw’s Supermarket, 180 Waterman Drive, South Portland. Shoppers going into the grocery store are asked to remember the local food pantry and buy accordingly. When shoppers come out of the supermarket having purchased goods for the pantry, Rotarians pile the goods on to the bus and watch the donations grow.

Nonperishable items requested for the food drive are peanut butter, tuna fish, Spam, hash, spaghetti sauce, macaroni, vegetable soup, canned fruit and coffee. Shoppers may also choose to donate cash or grocery gift cards to the pantry.

People who want to donate before the drive may drop off nonperishable goods at South Portland Housing Authority, 100 Waterman Drive, South Portland.
