Sentry readers have voted Helen Vinal of South Portland as the newspaper’s Great Person of 2013.

Vinal is known for her upbeat attitude as a bagger at Hannaford Supermarkets in Mill Creek. Debi Puffer, also of South Portland, nominated Vinal and was incredibly pleased when she heard the news.

“She deserves to be recognized. Helen is a common person that gets overlooked. She is always cheerful,” Puffer said.

Puffer cites Vinal’s constant pleasant demeanor as the reason for her nomination.

“We often choose to wait in a longer line at Hannaford if it means that Helen is our bagger,” she said.

Vinal was excited when she heard about the recognition.

“I’m proud of myself,” she said.

Vinal cites the constant support from shoppers, neighbors and friends as the reason for her win.

“People like me,” she added.

Vinal did not allow much time for the news to sink in. She instead focused on getting back to work and helping her customers, a lot of whom she looks forward to seeing in 2014.
