Dems to caucus in South Portland

The South Portland Democratic Party will gather for its biennial caucus at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 2 in the senior wing at South Portland Community Center.

“The caucus is a great opportunity for Democrats in South Portland to join together to support our state and local legislative candidates as they prepare for the important election later this year,” said South Portland Democratic City Committee Chairman Matthew Beck. “We’ll get to hear from many of our candidates and their representatives to find out how we can help defeat Paul LePage and maintain Democratic majorities in the Maine Legislature.”

The caucus will also feature the election of South Portland’s delegates to the State Democratic Convention and officers of the South Portland Democratic City Committee.

Doors for the caucus will open at 12:30 p.m. Unenrolled (Independent) or unregistered voters will be able to register as Democrats on Sunday, March 2 at the Community Center before the caucus convenes. The deadline for Republicans to switch to the Democratic Party in order to be eligible to participate in the caucus was Feb. 15.

“We urge all registered Democrats in South Portland to participate in the caucus,” Beck said. “One of the lessons learned from the election in 2010 is that bad things can happen in the state of Maine when Democrats fail to get engaged and choose not to play an active role in the political process.”
