Women want open gym time too

To the editor:

I am writing to express my disappointment that the South Portland Recreation Department cut the women’s basketball open gym time for the current winter/spring session. However, there are five (yes, five) open gym times available for men to play. There are no women’s-only open gym times.

During the fall session women were able to enjoy the camaraderie of other women and play basketball 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the South Portland Community Center. However, this was eliminated for the current winter/spring session. The current winter/spring session has no women-only open gym times.

I am sure you are familiar with the passing of Title IX in 1972. This law was implemented to give girls/women equal opportunities to participate in sports and outlaw sex discrimination.

It appears the city of South Portland is taking a step back in time. There are no longer any opportunities for women to play basketball with other women at the South Portland Community Center, yet the men have five open gym times available to play basketball. Have we resorted back to a time when women had to fight for their rights?

As the South Portland Recreation Department works on developing its fall offerings, hopefully officials will seriously consider the meaning of Title IX and give women some open gym court time. We are not asking for five time slots like the men have, but one time slot would certainly be a starting place.
