Dollars for Scholars reaches milestone

With the awarding of $35,000 in scholarships to members of the South Portland High School class of 2014, South Portland High School Dollars For Scholars has awarded a total of $119,400 to 328 graduates since its first awards in 2008.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we also thank students, alumni, families and the entire South Portland community for their generous donations,” said Ralph Cabana, Dollars For Scholars president. “One student, in a thank you note, wrote ‘I would like to thank you for the money I received from the (South Portland High School Dollars for Scholars) committee. It really means a lot to me, because it shows that my community supports us students.’”

By its affiliation with Scholarship America/Dollars for Scholars, hundreds of colleges pledge not to deduct a Dollars for Scholars scholarship from a student’s financial aid package and about 100 match the award, providing a bonus to graduates and their families.
