Church to celebrate 175th anniversary

Peoples United Methodist Church plans a week of celebration beginning Sunday, Sept. 7 as members invite the community to share in the 175th anniversary of the first class meeting that grew into this faith community.

Located at 310 Broadway, Peoples UMC began 175 years ago in Point Village (now known as Willard Square) at a class meeting held in a local home. In 1853, the church was constructed in Ferry Village. In 1945, when the shipyards were built in South Portland, the church moved to its present location.

Among the events open to the public being held are an outdoor worship service under a tent at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at the church and a memorial service of light near the bath house at Willard Beach at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10. On Saturday, Sept. 13 a Heritage Days Fair will be held at the church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
