Rolnick Chiropractic

Dr. Ellie’s Health Tips: Stroke Prevention: When a blood vessel leading to or in the brain bursts, the brain is deprived of vital oxygen and nutrients. This incident is called a stroke. Strokes are the number three killer in the United States, affecting over 700,000 people each year. A stroke can leave you with weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, speech difficulties, balance issues and memory loss. A severe stroke can kill you. If it doesn’t, it may leave you paralyzed and in a coma. The bottom line is that a stroke is a condition that needs to be avoided at all costs. Melanie Haiken from Caring.com has compiled a list of five foods that can lead to a stroke.

Learn this list and avoid these foods: (1) Crackers, chips, store bought pastries and baked goods and fried fast foods (like chicken nuggets, fries and onion rings). These types of foods contain hydrogenated oil (trans fats). Trans fats are dangerous artery blockers that not only contribute to strokes, but they also cause heart disease. (2) Smoked and processed meat. Processed meats like bacon, sausage and cold cuts contain preservatives, sodium nitrate and nitrite. Sodium nitrate and nitrite cause blood vessels to harden and narrow. (3) Diet soda. The reason diet sodas are a trigger for strokes is not exactly known, but Columbia University recently presented a paper at an American Stroke Association conference that said that diet soda drinkers had 60% more strokes than those who didn’t drink diet soda. (4) Red meat. Red meat is high in saturated animal fat. Saturated animal fat clogs blood vessels by building up protein plaques in the arteries. If you eat meat, choose the leanest cuts available. (5) And lastly, canned soup and prepared foods (frozen, store made). Why? Salt. High salt intake leads to high blood pressure, which is a major factor in stroke. People, who consume over 4000 mg of salt per day double their risk of stroke. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Americans average close to 3500 mg per day, which is entirely too much sodium in the daily diet. A stroke is not only devastating to the person it happens to, but it also has a major impact on the entire family. If you can avoid having a stroke by avoiding these five types of foods, I would make a huge effort to eliminate or decrease your consumption of them considerably, for your sake and for your family’s sake.

Chiropractic Thought for the Month: Chiropractic offers a unique place in modern health care. On the one hand, it draws upon modern scientific knowledge and techniques. On the other hand, it utilizes the ancient concepts of self-healing, life energy and natural healing. Chiropractic teaches us that the best way to improve our health is by removing the elements that interfere with normal body function. Along with spinal nerve pressure, these include drugs, unnatural foods, pollution, chemicals, excess tension and other forms of emotional distress. ~ Tedd Koren, D.C For more information, call Rolnick Chiropractic at 207-283- 1168 or check out our web page at www.rolnickchiropractic.com

Why struggle alone?

Life can be stressful for all of us. At times we feel alone and wish that we had someone to talk to outside of our immediate family and friends, someone who could see and understand our concerns from a fresh perspective. With increased self understanding, comes the ability to be more conscious about behavior choices and to reduce repeating self defeating patterns. The therapeutic relationship can offer the opportunity to learn new skills for creating and improving other relationships.

Andrea Summer, licensed clinical counselor and modern psychoanalyst, is now expanding her practice at 9 Beach St., Saco, Me. Evening hours are available, most insurances are accepted or a sliding scale fee schedule is possible. Andrea works with adolescents, adults and couples. There is also an opportunity to be part of a therapeutic support group with a focus on relationship building and stress management in the near future. The Home Energy Savings Program

The Home Energy Savings Program, or HESP from Efficiency Maine is providing the most accessible support for homeowners who need to re-insulate their homes,” reports Mark Walker, General Manager of Home Snuggers. To help them cut their heating bills, Efficiency Maine will rebate up to $1,500 to customers. And almost all new Home Snuggers customers qualify for at least $1,000 from Efficiency Maine.

Home Snuggers is a Windham based family business founded in 2011, solely for the purpose of re-insulating homes in Maine. Their premier product, RetroFoam, is a super insulation technology tested in thousands of existing American homes over the last 10 years. Homeowners typically slash their heating bills by one third with the addition of RetroFoam to their exterior walls. RetroFoam seals all the gaps and cracks where heat escapes and eliminates drafts.

Anyone interested in financing the modest cost of a RetroFoam installation - an average home is only $2,500 to $4,000 - can apply for a low interest PACE Loan from Efficiency Maine. Energy savings usually cover the monthly loan payments, which makes it easy to pay off quickly.

According to Walker, “Everyone knows energy costs will rise in coming years. Home Snuggers provides healthy and affordable insulation, while being a neighbor of integrity in our communities.” It is noteworthy that RetroFoam is totally eco-friendly. Eric Hallee, Vice President of Chase Customs Homes points out, “RetroFoam doesn’t produce vapors, and installers do not need protective gear.”

Customers speak highly of Home Snuggers. Exclaimed Deborah King of Cape Elizabeth on one cold, sunny morning as she walked into the office: “It is so hot in here, you have to turn the heat down. Apparently the RetroFoam is working. The heat wasn’t even on!”

Efficiency Maine’s Home Energy Savings Program will likely be funded through June 30, 2015. Homeowners should take advantage of this incentive of up to $1,500 for upgrading their house while also cutting their home heating bills.

“A Maine Bridge to Home” Offers Respite for Patients and Families

As you recover from an illness or rehabilitation, consider our respite program,“A Maine Bridge to Home.”To help ensure the best possible outcomes and timely recovery, we at Kindred Assisted Living -- Village Crossings have created a full service short-term post-surgical respite program with a very affordable daily rate. We have found that when a person is discharged from the hospital it can sometimes be a fearful and disorienting journey. Family members and/or friends suddenly become caregivers, which can be overwhelming while trying to balance their own daily lives.

Our A Maine Bridge to Home program is designed to aid patients as well as their caregivers. Our nurses and direct care staff members are ready around the clock to work in conjunction with your physician to deliver the care needed for recovery. In addition, we also provide support for therapy services covered under Medicare B and/or private insurance, as well as nursing services under Medicare part “A” if qualified. The overall goal is to support the patient’s healing process and the journey to independence.

At Kindred Assisted Living -- Village Crossings we offer assistance with daily living needs, medication administration and on-site nursing supervision if needed. Special dietary requirements, mobility goals and therapies can be monitored daily.

While recovering in our community, you reside in a furnished studio apartment with a handicapped-accessible private bathroom including an emergency call bell system. You may choose to include meal tray services from our fabulous Marsh View restaurant and, of course, receive hands-on care if needed. Our amenities include twenty-four hour care and community companionship to assist in minimizing the possibility of a readmission to a hospital and to enhance your journey back home. So if you find you need a place to gain strength while recovering, try our A Maine Bridge to Home program, and let us help you create a successful healing journey!

Kindred Assisted Living -- Monarch Center is designed for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Each of the 42 residential apartments offer a private bath and luxury common space including an elegant living room, gracious dining room and a country-style eatin kitchen. Each apartment has windows with views of the garden area and easy access to the courtyard from each neighborhood or wing.

It’s like family at Just for Women Gynecology

The doctors at Just for Women Gynecology, well known in the southern Maine area, especially Springvale and Sanford and, recently opened a new practice at 462 Main St., Suite 1 in Springvale, near Rite Aid and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Dr. Cathy Miele and Dr. Kathleen Morris each have more than 25 years experience in in their field and not only offer medical expertise, but a commitment to their patients that is unparalleled.

When Goodall Hospital merged with Southern Maine Medical Center, the doctors opted to open their own practice for the convenience of their patients.

Their new location is central to those clients who don’t have vehicles, is wheelchair accessible and offers plenty of parking.

“Most of our patients followed us,” Dr. Morris said, adding that even patients from New Hampshire, Canada and as far as Jamaica have followed them to the new practice.

The doctors, however, think some patients may not know about the new practice and its location.

“Our last day with the former outfit was Dec. 31 and our first day in the new practice was Jan. 1,” Dr. Morris said. There wasn’t much time to get the word out.

Those who have visited the new office are very pleased with its accommodations and have been happy to learn that the doctors are still able to help them with their gynecological needs such as pap smears, treatment for infections, contraceptives, birth control management, treatment for heavy periods such as ablation with D&Cs and more.

What’s better is that Dr. Miele and Dr. Morris have more availability than before and are flexible with their schedules, even taking patients earlier than typical office hours and after work hours.

“We’re very happy to offer easier access,” Dr. Miele said, adding that they also offers a portal system where patients can access records, lab results and request appointments easily online, or via telephone outside of office hours, always reaching one of the doctors in person.

Just for Women Gynecology accepts all the same insurances that were taken before and the three medical assistants who worked with Dr. Miele and Dr. Morris before came with them to the new practice.

“The staff is really good and very experienced with woman’s health – not to mention how friendly they are,”Dr. Miele said, adding that she even delivered the practice’s receptionist.

“We keep it local and we’re like family,” she said, adding that Dr. Morris grew up right in Biddeford and graduated from Biddeford High School.

The doctors treat girls and women of all ages; they also treat college aged women who are home for the summer.

Both doctors have taken on work with the new practice that includes payroll, book keeping and even housekeeping.

“We wear many hats,” Dr. Miele said.

They’re fine with that, though, as both are down to earth and as their most recent advertisement shows, like to have a good laugh. To make an appointment at Just for Women Gynecology, call 206-7270. To learn more about the practice, visit www.justforwomengynecology.com.
