No to pot; kids are our future

To the editor:

Please vote no on the marijuana issue on the Nov.4 ballot in South Portland. This vote is not about the use of medical marijuana, just recreational. There are many reasons for not legalizing recreational marijuana or as the kids call it, pot. Already we have two drugs that are legal, alcohol and tobacco and both of them have destroyed many kids and many families. When kids see adults using the legal drugs, they see it as okay for them. According to the Maine Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, kids will get marijuana and it can have some devastating effects.

Your teen only has one brain and one body.

Studies indicate that problems with attention, learning, memory and processing can make problems for them now and in the future.

The amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are three to five times greater than from tobacco smoke.

Marijuana contains more cancer-causing chemicals than tobacco. Marijuana smokers inhale deeply and hold the smoke in their lungs longer which may increase their risk for developing lung cancer.

Recent studies have shown a link between frequent marijuana use and the occurrence of testicular cancer.

Please vote no on legalizing recreational marijuana. Our kids are our future.
