WinterFest includes an array of events

The South Portland Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department, along with The Rotary Club of South Portland- Cape Elizabeth will host the third annual WinterFest on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31. All events throughout the weekend are free and open to the public.

Events will kick off on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with a block party in Knightville, which includes a luminary walk from Knightville to Mill Creek Park. Many of the Knightville businesses will be open late and provide in-store specials or sidewalk activities, sponsored by Town and Country FCU. There will be musical entertainment and an ice carving demonstration. A skating party, a Glow in the Dark Chuck a Puck Contest Sponsored by Giroux Energy, an on location broadcast with Coast 93.1 and a wing eating contest sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings will take place at Mill Creek Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Skate tune ups will be offered by Back Bay Skate Shop. Saco-Biddeford Savings Institution, Buy Local and Tim Horton’s will also provide refreshments.

Saturday events will begin with a pancake breakfast at the South Portland Community Center from 7:30 to 10 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Cape Elizabeth Lions.

The South Portland High School Hockey Boosters will host a Chili and Chowder Challenge at Wainwright Recreation Complex from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All cooks are required to register for the event. Registration takes place at the South Portland Community Center or online at www.southportland.org. Deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 23. There is no cost enter the contest.

Other events starting at noon on Saturday will take place at Wainwright Recreation Complex on Gary Maietta Parkway. A snow sculpture contest, ice hockey clinic, wagon rides, turkey bowling, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, ice sculpture demonstrations and a pond hockey tournament are part of the day. There will be time for open family skating from 2 to 4 p.m. Food trucks will be on hand to provide refreshments at an additional cost.
