Shooting suspects arrested in South Portland
According to Lt. Frank Clark, spokesman for the South Portland Police Department, an 18-year old man was stabbed and a 19-year-old man was shot. Both are South Portland residents. The stabbing victim remains hospitalized, said Clark, while the shooting victim hassince been released from the hospital.
The attacks occurred at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday and investigators pursued leads, conducted interviews, and executed three search warrants throughout the day Thursday.
As a result, South Portland police have arrested two suspects, Essa Sayed, 18, of Portland, and Zachary Swain, 18, of Cape Elizabeth. Both men have been booked at the Cumberland County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder.
Clark said the incident “was not a random act.”
“Based upon the investigation, to date, the suspects and victims met in order to consummate a drug deal involving a relatively small quantity of marijuana,” Clark wrote in a press release, issued Thursday night. “This is an apparent incident in which the presence of drugs and money, not surprisingly, led to bad decisions and violence.”
The investigation remains ongoing and will be referred to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s office for consideration of charges. Clark said Additional arrests and charges “are expected.”
