Meeting about foreign workers to be held in Old Orchard Beach

The Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting its second J-1 Seasonal Workforce & Cultural Educational Conference 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 27. The meeting will be held at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall in Old Orchard Beach. Old Orchard Beach hires more than 500 foreign students to supplement its seasonal workforce each year. As such, the community employs the largest number of foreign students in the state.

The conference will feature speakers from the U.S. Dept. of State in Washington, D.C., Maine Department of Labor, Social Security Administration and Old Orchard Beach town officials, all of whom will provide the latest regulations, requirements and resources available in providing a particular service. There will be an opportunity to meet representatives from many sponsoring organizations who connect international students with employers and housing providers.

A second conference, more specific to the J-1 worker, will be held in late June and focus on the resources available to the seasonal worker. All foreign workers who are in southern Maine will be invited. The goal of the two conferences is to provide as much information as possible to all parties involved, and ensure the student worker has the most rewarding financial and culturally rich experience while being employed in the community.
