Center offers support group for adults who have lost

A new eight-week group for adults who have lost a loved one to cancer will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St. in South Portland.

Led by trained group facilitators, the group is a chance for participants to share the pain of losing a loved one to cancer with others who have also had the same experience. Such sharing helps group members to validate emotions, recognize the enormity of the loss and get help with the challenge of adjusting to life without a loved one. Group discussion topics include dealing with loneliness, adjusting to life without your loved one, taking next steps and finding meaning and reinvesting in life.

This is a drop-in group and no advance registration is required. To create a cohesive group atmosphere, newcomers will be welcomed during the first three sessions of the group. After Thursday, Sept. 24, the group will be closed to new members. The center will offer subsequent groups as necessary to meet community needs.
