Hospice volunteers needed in Cumberland County

Volunteers are urgently needed to provide companionship to hospice patients and their families. Join the Beacon Hospice team to add value to the quality of lives of terminally folks in area communities. Need extends from Ogunquit to Phippsburg and out to the New Hampshire border. Volunteers will make weekly visits to patients, sometimes in private homes or in nursing facilities, to brighten their days, break the monotony or help them participate in activities. One volunteer dresses the patient’s stuffed bear with cute seasonal outfits. Another volunteer receives “homework” assignments from her patient – “let’s talk about Lincoln.” The patient can’t wait for the next visit. Holding hands, sitting in silence, joking, pushing a wheelchair outside, playing bingo – participating in life.

We also increasingly have a need for veterans to offer the companionship only they can offer to veteran patients. As a veteran, volunteers can participate in recognition ceremonies as part of the national “We Honor Veterans” program, and present honor plaques and pins.

Free classes start Thursday, Sept. 17 and continue for seven consecutive Thursdays, with graduation on Oct. 29. The Beacon Hospice South Portland office is located near Maine Mall.
