We have a busy upcoming week at the South Portland Historical Society with a 5K community fundraiser and a walking history cemetery tour at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. We invite residents to take part in either or both of these.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, we’re holding the fourth annual Bug Light 5K Run & Walk, sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield at Bug Light Park. You can register on the day of the event and you don’t have to run, you can also register to walk in support of the South Portland Historical Society and South Portland Land Trust. The 5K starts at 9 a.m., plus a kids’ fun run will take place at 8:30 a.m., so please arrive early if you haven’t already registered to allow plenty of time to sign up and get your bib number. Same-day registration will be $25 per person and goes directly to support the work of the two local nonprofit groups. These groups help to maintain walking/ biking trails, work on parks and open spaces and preserve our local history for future generations. They are both directly working on projects that improve the quality of life for all residents.

For race participants, we have some additional sponsors who are providing services at the event. Any registered runner or walker can get a free post-race massage from Soma Massage & Wellness, which will be set up right near the finish line. We will also be joined by sponsor Back in Motion Physical Therapy. Their therapists will offer free pain consultations at the event, so if you have been nagged by an aching knee, hip, shoulder or other pain, stop by after you run or walk the race and they can help you out.

Please come on out Sunday and support these two South Portland nonprofits by walking or running in the annual Bug Light 5K. You’ll get some exercise, enjoy the spectacular views of the harbor and spend a pleasant morning with your friends and neighbors.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m., join us as I lead a walking history tour of one of South Portland’s oldest and most prominent cemeteries, the historic Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Meeting House Hill. Originally formed around the time of the Old North Church in 1734, the oldest recorded burial there was in 1742. The cemetery has served as the final resting place for many residents of the Willard, Ferry Village and Meeting House Hill neighborhoods.

The event is free for current members of the historical society or $10 for nonmembers. Meet on the Sawyer Street side. Rain date is Oct. 25.
