Learn about school green space

South Portland High School recently completed a major renovation, resulting in a learning space for the children and adults of South Portland. However, the interior courtyard space of the school remains unfinished, with only crushed rock and mulch as ground cover. This was a practical solution, but aesthetically unappealing. Students and staff see a need for an outdoor green space that is both practical, beautiful and accessible for educational and service learning opportunities.

As a result of this need, the South Portland High School Sustainability Committee, along with student leaders, have teamed up with Shelly Tallack Landscape Design and with Sarah Witte, Landscape Architect to prepare a costconscious and low-maintenance courtyard design. This collaboration has been made financially possible through a grant from Portland Trails.

The organizations will run a design workshop 12:30 to 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the South Portland High School Learning Commons to gather input from students, custodians, staff and interested community members during the early part of the design process.
