How to lower blood-sugar levels without medication

Diabetes is a disorder in which the body cannot properly store and use the energy found in food. To be more specific, diabetes compromises the body’s ability to use glucose. According to MediLexicon International, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body wrongly identifies and then attacks pancreatic cells, which causes little to no insulin production. Those with type 1 diabetes usually must rely on insulin shots to remain healthy.

Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production and is the more common form of diabetes. The pancreas may still produce insulin, but not enough to meet the demands of the body. Insulin resistance occurs in some cases because a consistent high bloodglucose level causes cells to be overexposed to insulin and then makes cells less responsive or immune to its effects.

Diabetes treatment can include a combination of strategies, including the following nondrug remedies. • Diet: Diabetics can work with their doctors and nutritionists to come up with a diet that will be most effective. Some advocate for eating foods that are low in carbohydrates or ones with a low glycemic index. Others say that it is more important to restrict caloric intake rather than sugar intake.

Work with a professional to create a healthy diet and follow it as closely as possible. Eat meals at the same time each day so you can better regulate blood-sugar spikes and lulls. Skipping meals may cause you to overeat later in the day, which can throw glucose levels off-kilter.

• Exercise: Many people with type 2 diabetes are carrying around extra weight. Exercise can help them shed pounds and maintain healthier weights.

But exercise does more than just help you lose weight. The Joslin Diabetes Center says strength training exercises are an important component of workouts. By maintaining lean muscle mass, you can get rid of a larger amount of glucose in the bloodstream, thus helping manage diabetes in the process. Get at least 20 to 30 minutes of moderate activity several days per week.

• Supplementation: Some people find that certain natural ingredients can help regulate blood-sugar levels. For example, pure, organic apple cider vinegar taken over time can help people with diabetes manage their blood-sugar levels more effectively.

A small amount of cinnamon per day may be able to reduce fasting glucose levels by anywhere from 18 to 29 percent, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Always speak with a doctor before trying any home remedies to treat diabetes or exploring any alternatives to traditional diabetes treatments.

Piper Shores: Age brings higher risks for developing Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body metabolizes sugar. People can develop Type 2 Diabetes at any age, but older individuals are at higher risk. In fact, according to the American Diabetes Association, 12 million Americans over the age of 65 have Type 2 Diabetes; and it’s the seventh leading cause of death among this age group.

So why are seniors at risk? Mary DeSalle, G.N.P., Piper Shores’ Director of Community Health Services explains there are two primary reasons. “First, as you age, the cells in your pancreas also age and become inefficient, which alters insulin production. Second, people gain a lot of weight.” Whether or not you have Type 2 Diabetes, if you eat well and exercise regularly, then the cells in your body can use the sugar in your bloodstream more efficiently; this will allow you to lose weight and feel better.

For your health: Eat well-balanced meals that include lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein; and walk 30 minutes a day.

Nasson Health Care

For the last decade, Nasson Health Care, located at 15 Oak Street in Springvale, has taken a team-based approach to provide comprehensive health care for children and adults throughout York County.

“Nasson Health Care is a community health center. There is a national model of how community health centers operate that we abide by,” explained Martin Sabol, who has served as Nasson Health Care’s Director of Health Services since 2010. “We offer medical, dental, and behavioral health care in a fully integrated way. Our finely skilled staff works collaboratively to address each patient’s particular set of health needs and circumstances.”

At Nasson Health Care, each medical discipline uses the same information system so doctors, nurses and dental professionals have a complete list of a patient’s medication, mental health screenings, allergies and immunizations. “We know all the information about a patient that we need to know—the information is completely centralized,” said Mary Jeralds, Nasson Health Care’s Clinical Nurse Manager. “This enables staff to see the patient’s full health picture, and take an active approach to quality improvement and preventive care.”

In addition to streamlining care, the collaborative relationship between medical professionals also makes for a much more convenient experience for patients who may need to have medical, dental or behavioral health services. It is not required that patients receive the full array of services directly from Nasson, however. For those who receive one or more services at another practice, health center staff will contact and work with other providers so that the patient may receive all the benefits of coordinated care while still being able to keep their other providers.

There are a number of benefits to Nasson’s Patient- Centered Medical Home model. As Dr. Robert Grace, Nasson’s Dental Director explicated, “Once they are comfortable coming to one place, it becomes a home to them.” Nasson Health Care, which serves patients from all over York County, is one of the few medical providers accepting new patients.

The center has been located at its current facility for the last two and half years and operates satellite locations at Maine Behavioral Healthcare facilities in Springvale and Biddeford, York County Shelter Programs, Inc. in Alfred, and at the student health center at Noble High School in North Berwick.

Nasson Health Care recently opened a state-of-the-art dental office on the second floor after running out of space on the first floor, where the other medical offices are. “We were growing too fast and we recognized the need for more space. To have more clinicians to serve more patients, we needed more space and more treatment rooms,” Grace said. “I see roughly twenty new patients each week.”

In an effort to meet the continued needs of the Sanford/ Alfred/Lebanon area where two-thirds of patients live, Sabol said Nasson Health Care regularly conducts needs assessments to “see what needs are going unmet.” Of particular concern, he explained further, are those individuals with low incomes or who have difficulty keeping up with medical bills. “We see people regardless of their ability to pay. We take insurances, but we also have a sliding scale of paying.”

Nasson’s staff is also committed to helping patients stay healthy between medical visits. “People’s well-being, longevity and quality of life is drawn from a number of determinants. Only a small part of that is medical services,” Sabol said. Such factors include life-style choices, quality of food and diet, as well as exercise level.

To that end, Nasson Health Care works with patients on “self-care planning” to figure out a healthy life-style for them. Grace explained that poor life-style choices can impact not only medical health, but also dental health. “Dental care is more than just showing up to the dentist when your tooth is in pain. If you want to change your life positively, you have to change your behaviors in dentistry, as well as overall health.” For the last decade, Nasson Health Care has helped patients do just that.
