Issue is obvious

To the editor:

What a disappointing decision by the South Portland City Council to approve the armory project. The property was zoned as such because it will not work for the proposed traffic in and out that a gas station and convenience store would generate. That area is the main artery in and out of the city, and is already overcongested.

There are eight traffic lights within a span of less than 500 feet, thus making it one of the worst traffic situations in the city, if not the state. To add a business with a large volume of left turning entry and exit traffic is absurd. To quote the developer, “Even so, Latulippe said it is clear getting into the station will be difficult, if not impossible on occasion.”

I, as well as many others, foresee a terrible traffic mess as soon as they open. I’m sure that we will see a lot of vehicles backed into and blocking intersections, thus bringing traffic to a halt. I, and I’m sure a lot of others, will most likely avoid that area and its business in the future because of it. Perhaps I am wrong, but when the developer openly admits that it will be an issue, it’s difficult to think that I am.
