Library welcomes new director

Cape Elizabeth’s Thomas Memorial Library has a new leader to replace outgoing Library Director Jay Scherma, due to retire Jan. 22 after 20 years of service.

At its Dec. 14 meeting, the town council unanimously endorsed the selection of Kyle Neugebauer from more than 30 applicants for the job.

Neugebauer, scheduled to start work in Cape Elizabeth Jan. 13, is currently the adult-services librarian at the Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook.

“Everyone is full of praise for Kyle,” Town Manager Michael McGovern said.

“When we first put out the ad, we got applications from Arizona to Egypt, and all over the place,” Library Trustee RuthAnne Haley said. “Who knew we would get a guy from Westrbook? I think he’ll be a great fit, he’s a really nice guy and he’s delighted to be here.”

The library will be closed from Jan. 4 to the beginning of February while materials are moved into the newly renovated building.
