Letter writer balks at ‘hoax’

To the editor:

Bill Nilson’s meager contribution on last week’s editorial page of two titles for readers to peruse to disabuse their minds from accepting the facts of climate change, was met by this resident with a sigh, a rolling of eyes and a weary shake of the head.

Before I begin tearing down Mr. Nilson’s paper-thin assertion that climate change is a hoax, let’s take a quick look at the two writers he advised us to read: Mark Steyn and Alan Moran.

Steyn is a Canadian writer, journalist and conservative pundit who appears regularly on shows hosted by Sean Hannity, Hugh Hewitt and Rush Limbaugh. Both he and Alan Moran are associated with the Institute of Public Affairs (Moran is former director of the deregulation unit at the organization), an Australian right wing think tank, espousing privatization of state-owned enterprises, deregulation of workplaces, abolition of minimum wage ... and champion of climate change denial.

And thus the battle is waged. On one side, we have a near-unanimous consensus of thousands of climate scientists around the world: that the global climate is changing and human technology is not only the primary cause, but is actively accelerating it. From the other side are the handful of deniers who claim that the assertion of climate change is, at worst, a hoax, or, at best, a natural phenomenon that is not significantly affected by human activity. The latter position is – not surprisingly - endorsed by the right-wing media, nearly all congressional Republicans, and a few “experts” handsomely funded (bribed) by the fossil fuel industry.

So, is climate change really a hoax?

If so, then it is a hoax deliberately perpetrated by thousands of active climate scientists from dozens of countries around the globe. It is a hoax supported by nearly every national and international scientific organization, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Pentagon.

This ludicrous and fantastical claim of climate change as hoax would amount to a veritable international conspiracy.

What possible motive could unite so many experts from so many differing countries and national interests – a motive so compelling that it would drive them all to participate in a colossal fraud? Financial gain? Hmmmmm, it would seem the inverse were closer to the truth – how much have the Koch brothers spent on lobbying Congress to deny this inconvenient truth?

No, only the myopic and/or self-deluded continue to swallow the outrageous claims spewed at us by the mouthpieces financed through the Kochs and the fossil fuel industry. And, in doing so, condemn our one world to a hasty demise.

In closing, I’ll see Mr. Nilson’s two spurious titles, and raise him eight more enlightened tomes.

• Jill Fitzsimmons: “Meet the Climate Denial Machine”

• James Hansen: “Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity”

• James Hoggan: “Climate Cover- Up”

• William D. Nordhaus: “Why the Global Warming Skeptics are Wrong”

• Naomi Oreskes and Eric Conway: “Merchants of Doubt”

• Ernest Partridge: “A Convenient Delusion and Climate Reality Bites the Libertarians”

• Stephen H. Schneider: “Science as a Contact Sport: Inside the Battle to Save Earth’s Climate”
