Artists to display work at city café

“The Face of Yunnan,” photographs by Mason Philip Smith and paintings by Heidi Geist and Jo-Ann Fleishman will be on display through March 16 at CIA Cafe, 72 Ocean St., South Portland. An artists reception will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Smith has photographed Maine and other subjects for over a half a century. In recent years he has photographed the people of China’s southwestern province of Yunnan. Fourteen of his Yunnan images are included in the permanent collection of the Sherman Hines Museum of Photography, Nova Scotia. A conceptualist, he knows what he is looking for and he finds it.

Geist, born and bred in the west, now resides in South Portland and is a self-taught artist whose style and subject matter vary. Mediums alternate between large acrylic and fluorescent (blacklist responsive) paintings on wood panels and highly detailed pen and ink compositions. Fleishman travels statewide painting landscapes from Aroostook to York counties. She was inspired to paint landscapes after seeing the work of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Mediums include watercolors, oil pastels and acrylics.
