Recognize the effects of domestic violence

To the editor:

Domestic violence has become very serious problem in our community, particularly in the Sudanese community. It is destroying the families. Life is precious. No one deserves to be abused.

Domestic violence may cause depression in partners and develop poor health that may even lead to death. It has negative effect on children, physically and emotionally. The partners who experience domestic violence do not realize the effect that they’re causing to their children. Many victims underestimate their abusers ability. They think their abuser would not harm them. Many abusers do not realize what they are doing wrong.

Domestic violence is an aggressive behavior used by a person in a relationship to control his or her partner. I encourage those who are victims not to remain silent. They can call the national domestic hotline at 1800-799-7233 or 1800- 787-3224. Victims can obtain a protection order against the abuser. Anyone who experiences violence should not ignore this problem. If you know someone who has been abused, please give them the number above. This type of violence can cause someone to lose her life.
