High school swings at recent festival

The Maine High School Instrumental Jazz Festival, hosted by South Portland High School, South Portland Music Booster, and the Maine Music Educators Association on March 11 and 12, brought schools across the state from Presque Isle to York, to a two-day festival of music and competition. Competing in small combos and large ensembles, students were adjudicated by professional jazz musicians and jazz educators.

Congratulations to instrumental music director Craig Skeffington and the South Portland High School Jazz Ensemble 1 for capturing first place in Division 1 at the festival. Westbrook High School, directed by Kyle Smith, placed second. In addition, the South Portland High School Jazz Combo 1 took first place and the Jazz Combo 2 took second place. Outstanding Musicianship Awards went to junior Owen Doane on trombone and sophomore Liliana Brandão on voice and flute.
