(Courtesy photo) We’d like to thank Jim Minott for his recent donation to the South Portland Historical Society. Jim is known by many here in South Portland as the former principal of Brown Elementary School; he retired several years ago but he has a long and continuing history with our city.

Shown here is this wonderful image of our collective past. Jim’s grandfather, Clarence Minott, attended Sunday school at Elm Street Methodist Episcopal Church (later known as Elm Street United Methodist Church). The Sunday school put forth a baseball team and Clarence was undoubtedly their ringer – he was a tremendous baseball player who, after graduating from South Portland High School in 1910, went on to Bowdoin College where he pitched for the baseball team there.

The photo is believed to have been taken in 1912 (see the jersey on the boy in the front row). Clarence Minott is in the back row with the black shirt on. It’s a lovely photo that also serves to document the clothing and styles of that time.

If your family is from South Portland, please check your photo albums for us. We are always looking for images of South Portland in earlier years. We are happy to scan images so your family can retain the albums. If you have anything that you think is worth sharing, please give us a call at the society at 767-7299 or email us at sphistory04106@gmail.com.
