Cape may purchase land for Robinson Woods

Cape Elizabeth is mulling the purchase of an "L"-shaped lot that, town officials say, will improve access for residents of Oakhurst Road to more than 250 acres of open space extending as far as Robinson Woods.

"This has been an area where we have worked cooperatively with the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust and other parties in seeking improved access," Town Manager Michael McGovern wrote in an April 25 email to town councilors.

The deal would involve spending $75,000 to buy a 0.89-acre lot from Karen Willens, located behind her home on Rock Wall Lane. The parcel already had a trail connecting Glendon Road to Loveitt Woods, owned by the town. Those woods abut the Stonegate property and, from there, Robinson Woods, owned by the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust.

Money for the purchase, if approved, would come the town’s land-acquisition fund. That would require spending down more than half of the account, which has a current balance of $144,384.

The Cape Elizabeth Conservation Commission will review the proposal at its next meeting, on May 4. The town council is expected to weigh in at its next meeting, on May 9.
