Concert to feature Brazilian music

The South Portland Public Library’s next After Hours concert will feature Choro Louco at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the main location.

Based in Portland, Choro Louco is dedicated to the century-old tradition of Brazilian Choro music. Brazilian Choro has been around for more than 100 years, but in this country it’s virtually unknown. David Grisman, Mike Marshall and a handful of others have helped introduce the music and the musicians to a larger audience, but it’s still largely under the radar of most music listeners. Its melodies, complex harmonies and syncopated rhythms combine elements of European folk and classical, ragtime, jazz, Latin and African music creating a style that is uniquely Brazilian.

Members of the band come from diverse backgrounds and play with various other local ensembles.

For more information, call 767-7660, ext. 2. The program is made possible thanks to the support of Friends of the South Portland Public Library.
