Land trust to host guided walk

As part of a celebration of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4, the South Portland Land Trust invites the public to join a guided 1.1-mile hike on the trail that encircles Clarks Pond on the city’s west end.

The hike will be led by board member Jeff Ryan, who helped the Clarks Pond Trail come to fruition and recently wrote the book “Appalachian Odyssey,” an account of his 28-year hike of the Appalachian Trail.

The hike will depart from the Home Depot parking lot trailhead (to the right of the garden center) at 9 a.m. (look for the trail kiosk). Participants should plan on a 45-minute, moderately strenuous woodland walk.

National Trails Day is an initiative of the American Hiking Society. According to the organization, it is its signature trail awareness program and inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out their favorite trails to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects.

For a description of the trail and directions to the trailhead, please visit http://www.southportlandlandtrust.org/take-a-hike/clarks-pond-trail.
