Let us consider our city’s smallest residents

To the editor:

Some of us may have noticed the bee safe yard signs here and there in South Portland. Let’s hope that in the coming months more and more South Portland residents will notice more real live bees and butterflies in all our yards.

To make that happen we need to get behind the effort to pass a good, solid ordinance that will regulate the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in our city. The research is clear: We are killing our collaborator insects, our pollinators, by spraying our lawns and gardens with toxic chemicals. We are degrading our soil with synthetic fertilizers just to have a perfect lawn. Let’s make sure our council votes for a strong ordinance to ensure a healthy environment for all that lives and breathes in our city.
