Library’s summer reading programs begin for all ages

It is once again time for the summer reading program at South Portland Public Library. Starting Saturday, June 18, South Portland residents and South Portland Public Library card holders of all ages can sign up to participate in summer reading. There will be separate children, teen and adult reading programs, each with their own challenges and prizes.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program will celebrate movement and activity with the theme “On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” Children ages birth through fifth grade are challenged to read or be read to for 20 hours, and complete 10 activities over the course of the 10-week program. Finishers will win a new book and a custom designed T-shirt. There will also be raffles that children can enter weekly to win books and gift certificates to local businesses. Youth services has a busy schedule of summer programs, including Mr. and Mrs. Fish, Mad Science and Lindsay and her Puppet Pals.

This year marks the third annual teen summer reading program, the theme of which is “Get in the Game: READ!” Teens in grades six through 12 are challenged to read 20 hours and complete 10 activities within the 10-week program. Every finisher will win a new book and a Bull Moose gift card. Teens can also win other prizes by visiting the library every week to enter special raffles. Additionally, teen services will offer a variety of special programs, including a mid-summer ice cream social, weekly maker program and an afternoon of outdoor games on the library lawn.

The library’s popular adult summer reading program returns. “Exercise Your Mind” this summer by reading and entering weekly raffle drawings for a $10 gift certificate to Bull Moose. Three grand prizes, a $50, $75 and $100 gift certificate will be drawn at the end of the program. Stop by the front desk at the Main or Branch Libraries to pick up your reading card.

Participants can sign up at the Main Library starting Saturday, June 18, or at the Branch Library starting Sunday, June 19.
