Harbor health exam

On a rainy July 10, at precisely 10:10 a.m., a dozen volunteers hung out over the docks at DiMillo’s Marina to collect water samples for Friends of Casco Bay. Volunteers collected jars of seawater at 90 sites along the Fore River in Portland and South Portland. The analysis of the samples will help gather data about nitrogen pollution in Portland Harbor. Excess nitrogen has been identified as a source of green slime outbreaks of nuisance in Florida, Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico.
